Become a Buddy

The project only works if as many HIV positive people as possible want to become a Buddy. Generally anyone, irrespective of gender or age, can participate. If you want to become a Buddy, it is crucial that you have already processed your own HIV infection so that you can be an example of someone living a completely normal life with HIV. You should also have some important skills:

  • Reliability
  • Sensitivity to the topic of internalized stigma
  • Knowledge about HIV, the course of the disease and therapy options
  • Empathy and the ability to set boundaries
  • An awareness of your own limitations
  • An interest in further education
  • An ability to network

An ability to reflect on your role as a Buddy to prepare, you must participate in a two-part training course. Here you can fine-tune your communication skills through practical exercises with case studies and roll-playing. You will also get basic knowledge about HIV, as well as advice and recommendations on how to deal with discrimination, or feelings of guilt and blame regarding an HIV infection. The training course takes place on two weekends. For both dates a participation fee totaling 40 euros will be charged (this includes accommodation and meals). Travel expenses will be reimbursed upon request – there are no additional costs. If you are interested, you can register here for the next training.
